Cheshire referendum questions pass

CHESHIRE - Seven referendum questions passed Tuesday, approving about $5.5 million in new appropriations.

Projects included repaving work throughout town, bridge repair on Country Club Road, locker room improvements at Cheshire High School and replacement of items at the Mixville Pump Station.

The Mixville pump station item was up for referendum last year but failed. Town councilors tried to stress the importance of the project, which will replace sewage pumping equipment that is the oldest in town and near failure, according to the Public Works Department.

Referendums are required for capital projects exceeding $350,000.

The Water Pollution Control Plant design totaling $1.5 million, which passed Tuesday, is the first step in replacing old equipment. About $8.5 million is planned for upgrades at the plant in the 2011-12 capital budget.

Half a million dollars was also approved for building new boys locker rooms at Cheshire High School. Parents had complained about the conditions of the locker rooms, which were prone to flooding and were old.
