TOLLAND - Mitch Thornton gained 210 yards rushing on 24 carries and scored three touchdowns to help the Tolland football team defeat Platt 43-28 in a CCC Division III game at Old Tolland High School Friday.
Jameson Boucher scored on a 28-yard run to open the scoring for Tolland, but Platt answered with a 38-yard TD pass from Kyle Laurendeau to Josh Budwitz, both in the first quarter.
Tolland scored 20 points in the second quarter, including Thornton's 23-yard run, to take a 27-21 halftime lead. Platt (3-4 and 2-4) scored twice in the quarter, on a 30-yard pass from Laurendeau to Travaughn Morgan and Budwitz's 83-kickoff return.
"They were a tough team and they just rammed it down our throats," Platt coach Jason Bruen said. "We have to get tougher and we have to get better. We are a very young team and we make mistakes but we have to stop making them and we need more team players."
Thornton scored twice in the second half, on runs of 47 and 32 yards as Tolland (2-5, 2-4) opened a 43-21 lead before Laurendeau hooked up with Tyshon Shields on a 33-yard pass for the final score.
Budwitz gained 261 yards on five kick returns and made one reception for 55 yards. Laurendeau was 17-for-26 for 210 yards passing.
